San Carlo is the oldest working theatre in Europe, 41 years older than Milano's La Scala and 51 years older than Venice's Fenice, and was built in 1737 by King Charles of Bourbon. Vinci composed this opera in 1730, but it was not to be performed in San Carlo until 1738. It was revived in 1743, due to its popularity.
